Over 40,000 YouTube Views
I’m not sure how this happened, but my YouTube channel has passed 40,000 views. Combined with a motorcycle video on my old account, that brings the total to nearly 54,000.
For all the times I try to make something happen, the spontaneous successes are always the most interesting.
So it’s high time I revive the channel.
What would you like to see?

What's the Big Idea?
From Getting Real by 37signals:
This vision will guide your decisions and keep you on a consistent path. Whenever there’s a sticking point, ask, “Are we staying true to the vision?”
How much of our lives would be better if we lived by these words?

Fund Yourself
From Getting Real by 37signals:
…do what you can with the cash on hand. Think hard and determine what’s really essential and what you can do without. What can you do with three people instead of ten? What can you do with $20k instead of $100k? What can you do in three months instead of six? What can you do if you keep your day job and build your app on the side?
Now that my main...

Design In Decline
It used to take a single click to manage subscriptions in Google Reader. Now it takes three.
Small improvements are good. Small regressions can be annoying as hell.
Please think harder about your design.

Google Maps Coming Indoors →
Won’t be long until you don’t need to stop and check the airport or mall directory. It’ll be on your phone.
Not that I ever check a mall directory, since I’m hardly ever in a mall… but you get the idea.

Marco isn’t even 30 yet? Damn. I need to get busy and accomplish something notable.
Great post by the way. It’s a lesson I’m still learning.

The Cultural Night Closes In →
The things that have forever constituted civilization – respect for learning whether one had it or not, wide reading, careful use of language, manners, such notions as “lady” and “gentleman” – these are held in contempt.

Microsoft's Productivity Future Vision →
John Gruber at Daring Fireball:
This video encapsulates everything wrong with Microsoft. […] Imagine if they instead spent the effort that went into this movie on making something, you know, real, that you could actually go out and buy and use today.
I just hope the future isn’t filled with so many white walls.

Plain Text Bookmarks
Brent Simmons at inessential.com:
I’ve not yet found a bookmarking service that I love, but this new Kippt could be it. It’s attractive and simple — and, best of all, has no social aspect.
Last year I gave up saving my bookmarks in a web browser. I realized it had just become the place where links go to die. I’d save things of interest, but hardly ever reference them again. If I switched...

Nest — The Learning Thermostat →
Turns out you change the temperature in your house 1500 times a year. 1500! Our thermostat learns what temperatures you like so it can program itself.
I’ve never been excited about a thermostat. That’s the power of good design.

"I Have To" vs "I Get To"
In an effort to lose the forty pounds I’ve gained since moving to Italy (every bite was worth it) and to generally lead a healthier life, I’ve been going to the gym regularly for the last several weeks. The biggest factor that has helped me to maintain consistency is that I’m not pushing myself with every workout
Less Speed
There’s a running program I’ve attempted off and on for the last six...

Logic vs Convention In Punctuation
The other day I was wondering about the proper placement of periods and quotation marks. As I thought, the proper usage is to always place closing punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points) inside the quotation marks.
But it turns out this is only true for American English. British English uses punctuation logically, using closing punctuation inside the quotes if it is a part of...

Naked Man On The Highway
A few weeks ago I was driving down the highway on my way back from the store. There seemed to be some traffic backed up on the opposite side and knowing how absolutely horrible the drivers are around here, with a general lack of defensive driving or even basic merging ability, my first thought was, “what the hell’s going on here?”
Then I spotted the problem: there was a car stopped to the side of...

Never Quit Starting
I’ve been working on a project for the last eleven months. In reality this is only the most recent phase of a project I’ve been working on for ten years. The project is to figure out how I’m going to make an acceptable living. (I’m currently making a living, but it is not acceptable, for many reasons other than money.)
For the last eleven months I’ve been learning how to make a living online....

How Often Should I Call?
While I have generally been horrible at social networking (it’s hard to believe how many of my emails begin with “sorry it took so long to respond,”) there is one strategy I’ve used successfully when I want to have more frequent contact with someone and build a stronger relationship.
The Goal
This is a strategy to go from talking only occasionally, perhaps once a month or less, to talking as...

Yep, I’ve been away for a while now. I’ve been working on a few side-projects.
Now I’m focused, I’m back in the game, and I’m about to lay down a really exciting challenge.
This is going to get interesting.

Make Your Contacts Count... On Facebook
Last year in an effort to learn more about building relationships, I did some research to find a good networking book. The best I found was Make Your Contacts Count by Anne Baber and Lynne Waymon. The information they present is right on. Their method is comprehensive, powerful, and clear. I can’t recommend the book highly enough, and it’s only $10.17 on Amazon. (I’m not making money from these...

Will You Hate Me For My Friend Count?
Since I began to take Facebook more seriously four months ago, I’ve been trying to make more sense of it. I want to find the best way to seriously connect with people online and build relationships. My thoughts have changed wildly from one end to the other on this, but I’ve come up with a strategy I’m pretty happy with.
The problem is, it all comes down to one thing I haven’t been able to...

I Made My First Dollar Online!
After a week of being re-tweeted by Ed Dale, and discovering that this web site is starting to rank number one for a Google search of my name, I discovered something even bigger. Yesterday, a little over four months from my entrance into the world of internet marketing, I made my first dollar online! …and not just one dollar… $65.79!
It’s really not important exactly how I made the money. (A...

Record Better Podcast Audio In A Pinch
In one of the last lessons from the 2009 Thirty Day Challenge, Ed Dale gave a tip for recording decent audio in a pinch. Simply put a towel over your head and the computer! It eliminates any room echo and gives you a nice, quiet background with clean recording. It’s a great way to record decent audio if you’re traveling, or happen to live in a house made of concrete and marble.

Consideration #001 - Outlet Adapters
I frequently access the internet with my laptop at the local Navy air terminal, where the outlets are wired for both American and Italian power. Most people do not bring their adapters for the Italian plugs, so I always bring mine and leave the other plug open, just in case.
It doesn’t always happen, but often enough someone comes along, sits down at the next table, and doesn’t have to worry...
